The Laurentian Voyageurs track & field team concluded their regular season of indoor competitions this past weekend with “Last Chance” competitions hosted by the University of Guelph and Carleton University. The Vees had an outstanding weekend, collecting two medals, seventeen top-ten finishes and setting fifteen new personal bests.
Leading the way for the Vees was fourth year nursing student Kristen Mrozewski (Sudbury) who won gold in the women’s 1,000 metre event in a season’s best time of 3:00.61. Teammate and fifth year education student Sarah Booth (Peterborough) placed second in the same event in a time of 3:01.77, also a season’s best.
Other top performances for the Laurentian women included first year kinesiology student Alissa Diavolitsis (Sudbury) who placed 4th in the 60 metres (8.20 seconds), and third year criminology student Shelly Hladin who placed 8th in the long jump with a season’s best performance of 5.24 metres.
On the men’s side, the Vees sprint squad led the way with five athletes establishing new personal bests. First year engineering student, Abdul Abiodun (Sudbury) placed seventh in the men’s 60 metres with a time of 7.17 seconds in the heats and 7.18 in the final. Second year criminology student Josh Kim (Sudbury), tied Abdiodun in the final with a 7.18 clocking. Fifth year education student Skyler Savage-Perreault (Sudbury) placed tenth in the final in 7.19. Evan Jarvis (Syndenham), also established a new personal best of 7.30 seconds.
Competing at a different meet in Ottawa, fourth year architecture student Tristan Routhier (Saint Sixte, QC), established a new personal best in the 300 metres with a time of 35.51 seconds. This time places Routhier second in LU’s all-time school rankings and leaves him just eight one-hundredths of a second off the school record.

LU’s Keon Wallingford wasted little time in breaking his own school record in the 3,000 metres. The North Bay native was part of a small contingent of Laurentian’s varsity track and field team that travelled to Boston this past weekend to compete at two NCAA competitions.
At the Bruce Lehane Scarlett and White Invitational hosted by Boston University, Wallingford shaved another four seconds off his own school record in the 3,000 metres with a finishing time of 8 minutes, 21.25 seconds. Just two weeks ago, Wallingford eclipsed the school record in the event that had stood for 50 years.

Laurentian’s track and field team continued their regular season of indoor competition this past weekend at the 53rd annual York University Open in Toronto.
The Vees earned two relay medals and an additional ten individual top-10 results over the two days of competition.
The Laurentian women’s 4 X 200 metre relay team of Naomi Palmer (Sudbury), Maeva Sullivan (Sudbury), Shelley Hladin (Chartierville, QC) and Alissa Diavolitsis (Sudbury) won a silver medal with a season’s best time of 1 minute 51.81 seconds. On the men’s side in the same event, the team of Skyler Savage-Perreault (Sudbury), Josh Kim (Sudbury), Abdul Abiodun (Sudbury) and Tristan Routhier (Saint Sixte, QC) ran to a bronze medal in a time of 1:35.48, also a season’s best.
The top individual performer for the Vees was third year nursing student Brandon Radey (Sudbury) who placed fourth in the men’s 600 metre event with a time of 1:23.39. On the women’s side, Shelley Hladin was the top performer, placing 5th in the triple jump (10.98 metres) and 8th in the long jump (5.11 metres). Other top-10 finishers included Charlotte Grenier (Sudbury), 7thin the women’s 3,000 metres in 11:09.26; Alissa Diavolitsis, 7th in the 300 metres in 42.62; Georgia Lepage (Sudbury), 8th in the 3,000 metres in 11:24.31; and Claire Scholl (Newmarket), 10th in the 1,000 metre event in 3:12.65.

The Laurentian Voyageurs track & field team travelled to Montreal, QC this past weekend to compete at the 29th annual McGill Team Challenge. Competing against fifteen universities from Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes, the Vees placed eighth in the combined team scoring.
Leading the way for the Vees was senior Keon Wallingford (North Bay) who broke a fifty year old school record in the men’s 3,000 metre event with a time of 8 minutes 25.05 seconds. Wallingford’s time broke the previous record of 8:26.7 set by Vaughn Johnston in 1975. It also ranks him eighteenth in the U Sports national rankings at the time of this release.
The men’s 3,000 metre record was not the only longstanding school mark to fall on the weekend. The women’s 4 X 400 metre relay team of Kristen Mrozewski (Sudbury), Sarah Booth (Peterborough), Maeve Blake (North Bay) and Alissa Diavolitsis (Sudbury) posted a time of 4 minutes, 11.11 seconds, placing fourth in the event and eclipsing the previous record that had stood since 1995.
